I generally believe that cold calling 3-bets is a bad idea, in a sense that players often do it with JJ/TT/AQs or even worse hands and I think that with pocket pairs like JJ-99 it’s really hard to accomplish something 3-way.
By cold-calling the 3-bet you’re almost forcing the other guy into the pot, and you’ll be 3-way to the flop. This means that if you get an overcard to your JJ/TT/99 on the flop, you’re generally going to have to fold to a C-bet, because also the guy who C-bets will be tighter and probably not be bluffing 3-way in a 3-bet pot. This is rare.
Now, let’s see the percentages that these pocket pairs get an overcard on the flop:
JJ – 60%
TT – 70%
99 – 80%
Are you sure you want to play a hand like this multi-way and just fold to any bet post-flop? It’s just bad. You’re turning TT into 22. It’s going to be a nightmare to play post-flop. I suggest either 4-betting or folding these hands. Check more on this in the Cold 4-betting chapter.
The hands that you are cold calling vs a 3-bet should be the hands that:
- You can’t 4-bet for value.
- They are ahead of the 3-better’s range.
For example, if BTN opens and a 27/23/9 3-bets from the SB, I’d probably be very happy with cold calling AQs/AJs/ATs/AK/QQ and even AQo although I’d also like to cold 4-bet this hand because it doesn’t play that well multi-way as AQs but it also has blockers.
